Distance : 5km
Time: 21:41
Finished 17th
Well, it was a cold one this morning! My normal routine is to get the bus to parkrun, run and then run home as it's quicker than waiting for a return bus. Walking from the bus to the park this morning I could see my own breath and a number of people were out in big coats and scarves. There was me walking along in my running shorts and t-shirt, and nothing else! Time to think about adding some layers to my parkrun attire.
When I got to the Lions Den and warmed up with a couple of jogs of the start/finish straight I was eager to get going. The number of runners at Oldham parkrun is increasing which is good to see - why pay to do a 5k run when there are 145 to choose from and all free! Even though I've only completed twelve parkruns I definitely feel part of parkrun - even if you don't know peoples names everybody always talks, and it's easy to strike up a conversation - we are all there for the same thing after all!!
Set off at (for me) a blistering pace of 4:07 for the first k, perhaps I should have saved that for later, but what pleased me was I was able to keep up a decent pace for the next 4k - even if coming back up the hill my legs felt like they were running in treacle! Click on "view details" above for a breakdown - I wont bore you with it here.
There was some talk today of having a taxi ready at the bottom of the hill for the last lap, make sure we get that pb. But thankfully I didn't need it. For about the first time I didn't feel like I was going to die going through the Woodland Walk, must be getting the hang of it. I'm sure I'd have been on for a pb had there not been a very strong headwind on the finishing straight. I sprinted as fast as I could but it was hard going. Yep, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!
In other news my wife Jan has now taken up running. While this may sound unimpressive to some, it should be noted she had a knee arthoscopy just two weeks ago. Jan is following the NHS C25K plan - the idea being that you can go from sitting on the couch to doing 30 mins running in about nine weeks. Jan's plan is to be able to complete a parkrun before Christmas. She is blogging about her running, I wonder where she got that idea from :)
