Went away this weekend to York for my birthday. My birthday is in April - it's a long story. The first thing I did when I found out we were going on Friday till Sunday was check the parkrun site to see what the local parkrun was like.
Unlike other parkrun courses York is round the service track at the race course. Unlike my home run at Oldham it's a flat course with only a couple of corners of note. After recently clocking up a 20:33 at Oldham I set myself the target of getting round York in under 20 mins.
So, Saturday morning I skipped a full English breakfast at the B&B to make my way to parkrun - Mrs Y wasn't best pleased but these things have to be done! I got to the course on a cold foggy, wet morning. Good pb weather. The run briefing was short "run round one and a half laps" doddle. There was a lad pacing at 18 mins so I thought I'd see if I could at least keep him in sight (he had a bright orange top on so I had a chance).
The run isn't very interesting to say the least, not a lot to see especially with the fog and not much to keep the mind busy, no twists and turns to be thinking about. I settled into a good pace and watched the pacer speed off into the distance!
The only real corners on the course were the double 90 degree corners which are just before the finish, checking my Garmin (sorry no naked November for me - though I've not had an mp3 player on for a few weeks) I saw I was looking good for that sub 20, but it was going to be close. I put a burst of speed on - together with a big cry of "COME ON" as I sprinted for the line. I burst over the line, stopped the Garmin and was seriously chuffed with myself.
It was colder than I thought, my hands were so cold I couldn't get my barcode out! Panic! I wanted this time. Obviously I manged it but it took a few mins. There was also quite a bit of gibbering by me in my excitment of getting the time.
A big benchmark for me has been passed, I'd now like to try and get a sub 20 round Oldham; that, I think will be more of a challenge but one I'm going to work on.
