As I've got a 10k race coming up at the start of September I'm trying to do at least one long run a week of that distance to get my body ready for it. Yesterday I'd pb'd my 5k time at parkrun and was in high spirits for doing the same with 10k - granted this would be only the second time I'll have ran this distance but you can only improve on what you've done before.
The plan was to set off and keep to a steady 5 mins 30 seconds per kilometer. Using one of the snazzy functions on my new Garmin GPS watch (I'm still trying to work more than half the functions out!) I set my "virtual partner" to run that speed and I'd keep track with him.
I'd planned out a 10k route using Endomondo (www.endomondo.com) which started using one of my shorter routes and then turned off and went a different way. All was going well till I made the turn, I couldn't remember the name of the road I should have been on, but it didn't look like the one I WAS on.
Fear not thought I have my GPS watch and my mobile phone both of which can navigate me back home if needed.
So I carried on thinking "this don't look like it did on Google Street View" there was a reason for that - I wasn't on the right road and didn't have much of a clue where I was!
Suddenly all the houses stopped and industrial and run down retail units were all the rage. "Glad I'm not down here at night - this could be scary" because getting lost with no cash and no bus pass is a nice calming thing to do at any time!
Out of nowhere my guardian angle appeared and gave me a sign "Town Centre" -> that's what I needed! I started following these blue signs from the heavens which did indeed lead me to the town centre and back on to my route.
Worked out no longer than what I'd planned but it was still a bit of an "oh crap" experience and something I'm not going to try and replicate any time soon!
I did beat my pb, but while typing this I haven't worked out by how much, but a pb run is still a pb run even if I only shave a second off!!
Think I'm going to need to pick up the work rate for Sheffield as all though my route today had some serious hills part way though I'm not sure what the course there is going to be like so later this week I'll be doing some hill reps which I'm told is running to the top of a hill, back down and the repeating it. That should be fun. Let's hope I'm still here come Thursday!
